Six New Cards and 280,000 Miles/Points and $50 Later: My Q3 Round of Credit Card Applications
Good news and bad news. Bad news is that my Chase applications are getting denied – you might have read about Chase tightening the clamps on applicants with lots of recent inquiries. Good news is however that my Husband can finally apply for credit cards. Yay!
DISCLAIMER: Credit cards can be extremely dangerous for those that cannot control their spending and are not financially disciplined. If you cannot pay your credit card off in full at the end of every statement cycle, all the miles/points are NOT worth paying 15-25% interest. If you don’t have high enough credit score, your applications will be denied and it will lower your score even further. If you plan to take out a mortgage for a home or a loan for a car, recent inquires on your credit will impair your ability to get the best rate, or the loan. You don’t have to earn a lot, but you do need to spend less than you earn. Read more about it on Eden’s blog – Credit Score FAQ.
I applied for the Citi Prestige Card (annual fee of $350 when you’re a Citi Gold client). This card offers $250 air travel credit each year, complimentary access to American Airlines Admirals Club lounges and complimentary 4thnight for any hotel stay, worldwide. This card offers 50,000 Thank You points when you spend $3k in 3 months.
Why: I cancelled my Citi AAdvantage Executive Card so I no longer have access to Admirals Club. And the $250 air travel credit makes this card affordable for the first year.
Husband applied for the Citi Premier Card (annual fee of $95 waived for the first year). This card offers 3x points on travel and 2x points on dining. This card offers 60,000 Thank You points when you spend $3.5k in 3 months.
Why: Because it was offering 60,000 Thank You points! Also my Husband needed a Thank You account with Citi so he could become a Citi Gold client and earn another 40,000 Thank You points. Too easy!
My Husband applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (annual fee of $95 waived for the first year) because Chase Preferred Clients get 50,000 Ultimate Reward points (10,000 more than the public offer). Spend requirements are $3k in 3 months.
Why: Ultimate Reward points are the best. We can’t get enough of it!!!
I applied for American Express Business Gold Rewards card (annual fee of $175 waived for the first year) to get 100,000 Membership Reward points when you spend $5k in 3 months. This card offers 3x points on airfare purchased directly from airlines.
Why: Membership Reward points have become quite valuable because we can fly to Hawaii for 25,000 points per person.
I finally applied for a credit card outside the four major banks! I applied for the FlexPerks Card (annual fee of $49 waived for the first year). This card offers 20,000 Flexpoints when you spend $3.5k in 4 months. This card offers 3x points on eligible charitable donations and 2x points for ever $1 spent on gas, grocery or airline net purchases, whichever you spend most on each monthly billing cycle.
Why: I need to get creative with my point redemptions for domestic travel to East Coast.
I applied for Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express card (no annual fee) to have another American Express card. This card offers $50 when you spend $500 in 3 months.
Why: Did someone say AmEx offer?
