Five New Cards and 65,000 Miles/Points and Two Free Hotel Nights Later: My Q1 Round of Credit Card Applications

I know 65,000 miles/points and two free hotel nights are hardly impressive but I had to apply for the Chase Hyatt card to maximize the get 20% back on award stays promotion and Barclays US Airways card for 50,000 miles before it becomes AAdvantage Aviator card. Don’t miss out on these limited time offers!

DISCLAIMER: Credit cards can be extremely dangerous for those that cannot control their spending and are not financially disciplined. If you cannot pay your credit card off in full at the end of every statement cycle, all the miles/points are NOT worth paying 15-25% interest. If you don’t have high enough credit score, your applications will be denied and it will lower your score even further. If you plan to take out a mortgage for a home or a loan for a car, recent inquires on your credit will impair your ability to get the best rate, or the loan. You don’t have to earn a lot, but you do need to spend less than you earn. Read more about it on Eden’s blog – Credit Score FAQ.

I applied for the Double Cash Card (no annual fee). This card offers 1% on all purchases and 1% when you make payments. I wasn’t targeted for sign up bonus but I applied anyway.

Why: My Amex Blue Cash was shut down so this will be a great alternative to earn some cash back and minimize the costs of prepaid card fees.

I’ve been holding out to apply for the Hyatt Card (annual fee of $75 waived for the first year) because the two free nights is only valid for one year and I really really really wanted to save it for Maldives or Tokyo but we have a stay in Park Hyatt Seoul, Park Hyatt Paris Vendome and possibly Park Hyatt Sydney coming up so I wanted to make the most of the get 20% back on award stays promotion. This card offers $50 statement credit, Diamond Status and 2 free nights when you spend $1k in 3 months.

Why: I’ll be saving 57,000 points with the award stays promotion. No brainer!

American Express

My application for American Express EveryDay Card was denied during my last round of applications so I made sure to apply for the American Express EveryDay Preferred Card (annual fee of $95) this time. This card offers 3x points at supermarkets up to $6k and use your card 30 or more times and get 50% bonus points. This card offers 15,000 Membership Reward points when you spend $1k in 3 months.

Why: Membership Reward points have become quite valuable because we can fly to Hawaii for 25,000 points per person. We made the most of the recent 40% bonus transfer to British Airways so I’m hoping to rack up Membership Reward points until next promotion.

Discover it Miles is my first Discover card. I never thought I’d apply for a Discover card… never say never! This card offers 1.5x miles on all purchases but for the first year, you’ll earn double that. 3x miles is only marginally better than Barclays Arrival Plus Card but better is still better!

Why: I read somewhere that you should do one thing that scares you everyday. I’m being brave.

Barclays US Airways Mastercard (annual fee of $89) was purely to get the 50,000 miles before the card disappears!

Why: 50,000 miles for $89? YES!!!
